The Cheatham County Cubs have spent the majority of the 2009 season on the road, and the Cubs made the trip to Robertson County last Friday night to take on the Greenbrier Bobcats, who were celebrating their 2009 Homecoming. The Cubs battled all the way to the end, but came up short in a 13-6 loss to the homestanding Bobcats.

The going was rough early on for the Cubs as Greenbrier took the opening kickoff, and two plays later, running back Treavor Thaxton weaved his way through the Cubs defense on his way to a 50 yard touchdown. With only 25 seconds off the clock, the Bobcats led 7-0.

The Cubs went three plays and out on their first possession, and Greenbrier took over on the Cheatham County 35 yard line. After two first downs, Hunter Eden found the endzone and the Bobcats took an early 13-0 lead midway through the opening frame.

The Cubs moved the ball on the ground in the first half, but a couple of untimely penalties contributed to Cheatham County having to punt the football. After giving up some big plays in the first quarter, the Cubs defense stepped up to the challenge as they shut the Bobcats down the rest of the half. Sam Matlock and Grady Chipman each had tackles for losses as Cheatham County went to the locker room down only 13-0.

The Cubs defense continued to be the story in the second half as they held Greenbrier without a first down after the intermission. Shaun Montgomery, Brady White, Hussaen Ismail, Seth Hastings, and Dre Jock all had tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and Jack Matlock had a fumble recovery as Cheatham County stayed within striking distance.

The Cubs power running game picked up the pace as well behind the blocking of Kevin Eslick, Brady White, Aeron Bess, Manning Glaus, Tanner Owen, and Aubrey Louallen. Montgomery and Dakota White carried the bulk of the load for the Cubs in the second half. The Cubs got a huge play to start the final quarter when quarterback Reece Hunter found Mitchell Potts downfield for a 33 yard gain. A 15 yard run by Montgomery got the ball inside the Greenbrier 10 yard line, and on Third and Goal, Montgomery plowed in for a 3 yard touchdown to cut the Bobcats lead to 13-6 with 5:50 remaining.

After another defensive stop, the Cubs took over with 3:38 left on their own 13 yard line. Cheatham County moved the ball out to the 39 yard line, but time ran out on the Cubs as Greenbrier came up with an interception on the Cheatham County 29 yard line with 9 seconds remaining, and the Cubs left town with  a 13-6 loss in a valiant effort.

The loss dropped the Cubs to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in District 11-AA. Montgomery led the Cubs with 72 yards on 21 carries and 1 touchdown. White added 34 yards on 8 carries. The Cubs have an open week this week before they travel to face the Harpeth Indians on October 9th.

The Bobcats were led by Treavor Thaxton, who had 106 yards and 1 touchdown.
