The Cheatham County Cubs and the Camden Lions met last Friday night at Mike Jarreau Field on the campus of CCCHS. The District 11-AA matchup took place on a field that was decimated due to the torrential rains that have taken place over the past couple of months, but both teams managed the situation well considering the circumstances. The Cubs trailed only 12-6 at the intermission, but the Lions, who came into the game ranked number 4 in Class 3A, pulled away in the second half for the 26-6 victory. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cubs got on the board first as they finished off a 10-play, 87 yard drive when Mitchell Potts, who was starting his first game at quarterback, raced off of the right side for a 13 yard touchdown, and the Cubs took a 6-0 lead. A key play on the scoring drive was a 37 yard run by Shaun Montgomery. The extra point was no good, and the Cubs took the early 6-0 lead. The Lions came right back and responded when quarterback Michael Gaskin scrambled for a 30 yard touchdown. The 2 point conversion was no good and the game was tied at 6-6 with 5:36 to go in the first half. After forcing a three plays and out, the Lions took over again on their own 33 yard line. On second and 11, Trae White ripped off a 68 yard run, and Camden took their first lead at 12-6. The Lions took control in the third quarter as Gaskins scored on touchdown runs of 6 and 4 yards, and Camden took a 26-6 advantage to the final frame. The Cubs got fourth down completions from Potts to Devin Conner and Thatcher Brinkley during a long drive as Cheatham County tried to inch closer. The Cubs reached the Camden 26 yard line before turning the ball back over to Camden on downs. That was the last scoring threat for the Cubs as Camden went on to the 26-6 victory. Montgomery led the Cubs (1-7 overall, 1-3 District 11-AA) with 91 yards on 16 carries. Potts had 29 rushing yards and 47 yards through the air. The Cubs return to action this Friday night as they will host the Waverly Tigers in their 2009 Homecoming contest. The festivities will take place before the game and kickoff is set for 7:30. |
